Visit Argyle

Our Municipality is made up of 1500 km² of coastal and inland communities. Because of our unique geography, many of our communities are located on “fingers of land” which jut out into the sea creating a coastline that stretches more than 450 km.

The Municipality includes the longest continuously settled Acadian French communities in the world. The residents of today are the direct descendants of the founders from the mid-1600s.

Argyle welcomes you!

Harbout in Argyle

Living Here

Our economy is driven by various lucrative fisheries including herring, groundfish, scallops and especially lobster. Argyle makes up the largest percentage of Lobster Fishing Area 34 (LFA 34) which accounts for approximately 20% of all lobsters landed in Canada.

Argyle is also known as “Par-en-Bas”, which translates to “down below” which is a reference to our placement in the Acadian region of Southwest Nova Scotia. We have a population of approximately 7,900 people. Our communities are tightly knit and neighbours are quick to lend a helping hand.
